The excerpts provided here are taken from letters to the editor sent to the newspaper Wochenpost in 1989 in response to two essays written by Christa Wolf and published by that newspaper.

Under the title "Conformist or responsible? Letters to Christa Wolf in Autumn 1989" („Angepaßt oder mündig? Briefe an Christa Wolf im Herbst 1989”) the letters were published the following year by Petra Gruner at the publishing house Volk und Wissen in a volume together with the Wolf essays and a foreword. The examples selected here provide an insight into the variety of different approaches taken by the Wochenpost readers. They are provided here with permission of Petra Gruner.
