Educational film "Human Breathing" (1982)

The film has no sound and is about four and a half minutes long. It was published in 1982 by the Institute for Teaching Materials of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences (APW) of the GDR for 8th grade biology lessons and produced by the DEFA Studio for Documentary Films.

The film shows footage of boys in sports uniforms on a sports field in Potsdam, running and measuring their lung capacity. These scenes were combined with moving X-ray images of the lungs and abstract animated images of the movement of the chest. This is followed by teaching scenes in a classroom in which a window is opened as well as further shots of young adults playing sports and smoking on a bench outside. This film assumes prior knowledge and conveys health-related connections, with the message to keep respiratory organs healthy and preventing fatigue during "mental work".
